The desperate search for water (1/2)

In the village of Karako, Mali, women and children were having to walk up to 6 km every day just to find water. Often, the nearest source of water was not even clean. One of the residents, Sekou Coulibaly, desperately wanted to build a well so his family no longer had to make the long and perilous journey to bring back dirty water, but his income of just £1 a day as a tenant farmer is barely enough to sustain them.

With no sign of rain, the villagers were worrying about how they would survive. That is, until they received a community well from one generous donor. Now, the entire community can enjoy safe, clean water and women and children don’t have to travel far beyond their homes to access it. As a result, instances of water-related illnesses in Karako have dropped drastically.
